What Does this Label Lead You to Believe?

“Ocean Spray 100% Juice” means what, exactly?

Ruby Red Grapefruit, 100 percent juice, no sugar added. And the price is higher than an equivalent amount of refrigerated fresh 100 percent orange juice, so it must be pure grapefruit juice right? Wrong. It does not say “pure grapefruit juice” and it’s not.

If one reads the ingredients one learns that it contains grapefruit juice plus two other juices. Talk about deceptive labeling. I hope you are reading the labels in the “juice” section of the market. The only pure juices one can find these days are certain grape juices and most prune juices. All others, like 95 percent of the “juices”, are blends and “cocktails”, and are also spiked with high fructose corn syrup to help you get fat faster. Why? If I wanted soda pop or candy I can go to the soda pop or candy sections of the market. This is supposed to be the juice section, or it used to be anyway.

Be very careful when buying fruit juices. “Pomegranate juice” is mostly grape juice. “Blueberry” is mostly grape juice. Read the label and you’ll find that nearly all of them except grape and prune are not what they appear to be.

Switch Inventor Honored

After decades of controversy over inventorship, the inventor of the switch was recognized and honored at a recent awards banquet of the International Organization of Electrical Engineers. Professor Turnonanof (1871-1929) was posthumously awarded the Inventor of the Year Award and inducted into the IOEE Hall of Fame. The professor’s son, Clarence “Click” Turnonanof, was present to accept the awards and give a moving presentation of his father’s achievements.

In the early days, Turnonanof’s invention was embodied in an open frame style like this:

A spokesperson for the IOEE said that the organization was exploring the possibility of setting up a Turnonanof scholarship.

Canadian Sovereignty at Risk?

On February 14, 2008, the U.S. and Canada quietly signed a military agreement allowing the U.S. military to operate in Canada and vice-versa during a “civil emergency”. A cross-border crisis is not required in order for this to take place. This essentially creates a North American Army under the command of USNORTHCOM.

This follows and further extends a process that began in April 2002 with an agreement between the U.S. and Canada on a “civil assistance plan”. In 2006, the State Department confirmed the agreement.

“Operating under a “North American” emblem (i.e. a North American Command), the US military would have jurisdiction over Canadian territory from coast to coast; extending from the St. Laurence Valley to the Queen Elizabeth archipelago in the Canadian Arctic. The agreement would allow for the establishment of “North American” military bases on Canadian territory. From an economic standpoint, it would also integrate the Canadian North, with its vast resources in energy and raw materials, with Alaska.”

None of these agreements have received any significant press coverage in the U.S. or Canada.
